6 Low-key & romantic Valentine's Day ideas

11 February, 2015

It's Valentine's Day again and you want to do something enjoyable with your sweetie - but you don't really have the energy to make a big show of it. No worries! We've got you covered. After surviving the dark days of winter (and the yo-yo weather) we understand wanting to take it easy this week. Here are a few ideas for a low-key, yet still romantic and enjoyable ways to spend your Valentine's Day.

Drive one of the most beautiful drives in the world
Turn up that road-trip soundtrack and get lost in the beauty of the famous Sea to Sky Highway - and your significant other. The Sea to Sky Highway has been named as one of the most scenic and beautiful drives in the world by critics across Canada and around the world. We're lucky to have it right our backyard, and you should take this special occasion to drive up it again!

Take a romantic gondola ride up
Forget Venetian gondolas, this West Coast gondola ride takes you above and beyond the water and up into the sky. If you upload on the gondola at the right time, you could have a private, quiet gondola ride for you and your special someone. Visit before 4:00pm to make sure you catch enough sunlight during your ride up. Photo by Paul Bride.

Share a lunch fondue
Already have dinner plans? Take a break in the middle of your adventures and relax in our Summit Lodge restaurant over a pot of melting cheese or chocolate fondue. $15 for two people. Order at the servery counter in the Summit Lodge. Photo by Nikki Bayley.

Catch the sunset
The sun sets around 4:30pm-5:00pm these days and you can watch it from several spots at our summit. The Spirit Trail (20-40mins) has a couple of great viewpoints that face Howe Sound, as does the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, Panorama Trail (40-60mins), Wonderland Lake Loop (30-45mins) and several other longer hikes. Ask our staff for recommendations based on the type of walk or hike you are looking for. Photo by @stevelchan (top) and @alessia31_84(bottom) via Instagram.

Cuddle by the fire
We have two fireplaces, one indoors and one outdoors on our Summit Lodge patio. Sit beside our crackling wood stove indoors while you sip your favourite drink, share fondue and chat while the sun sets over the mountains and ocean. Photo by Nicole Gurney Photography

Our outdoor fire pits, supplied by Sticks and Stones Furniture, add a stunning element to our outdoor patio experience. Ask one of our Food and Beverage staff for a red blanket, grab a drink or a snack and sit tight by the fire overlooking beautiful Howe Sound and the surrounding mountains. If the fire pits are not on, don’t worry, our Food and Beverage staff would be happy to turn them on for you. Photo via Sticks and Stones Furniture.

Or just spend the day with friends
Whether you’re single, your significant other is away, or you don’t care much for Valentine’s Day, round up a group of friends and spend the day together. Walk n’ talk on one of our many hiking and walking trails, share cheese or chocolate fondue while you sip wine or hot cocoa by the fire in the Summit Lodge Restaurant, and of course, snap a group photo to remember the day! Photo by Paul Bride.
