Ask The Artisan - Sabrina Perfitt

11 August, 2016

Sabrina Perfitt shares her natural talent for baking and finds inspiration in making classic recipes.

Ask the Artisan is a weekly feature highlighting the talented vendors you’ll find at our night market. As a new addition to the Sunset Music Series, the Sea to Sky Gondola holds a Night Market at the base every Friday from 4-8PM. The intimate marketplace hosts a variety of local designers and craftsmen in a unique setting.

What do you design?

I create pretty little yummy things - edible art!

Tell us how you got to where you are today.

I have always baked. My mother had me making shortbread when I was a toddler, standing on the kitchen chair.  My mom is a natural baker and my dad was the appreciator of the treats. It was only fitting that I should follow! While I was studying design in New York, a friend asked me to create her wedding cake, and I realized then that this was what I needed in my life! It took a while, but I found a way to make it happen. I moved to Whistler as a pastry chef. I started working in the restaurants, and after a few years I created Sugar Momma Pastries. I fell into the world of Farmer’s Markets, and love my 10x10 pop-up shop!

What are the inspirations behind your designs?

I find inspiration in classic recipes - from my Gran’s collection to the internet.  I find it working in my garden. I am inspired by the enthusiasm of my customers!

Describe a typical day in Sabrina’s kitchen.

There is nothing typical about my workday! Most of what I do is custom work, from otters swimming on cakes to 500 cupcakes designed in a giant logo (thanks Sea to Sky Gondola!), to creating a bride and groom on a chairlift sitting on top of cake, whipping up jam from home-grown raspberries, to a Lamborghini out of cake, to hand-dipping a thousand truffles. Every day includes washing almost every single stainless steel bowl (then getting them dirty again!), struggling with computers, and a little daydreaming.

Tell us how your personality reflects your creations.

Bright, whimsical, creative yet simple.

What piece of advice or encouragement can you give someone who would like to start their own business?

Believe in yourself.
