Ask the Artisan - Terri Gercovich
20 July, 2016
Ask the Artisan is a weekly feature highlighting the talented vendors you’ll find at our night market. As a new addition to the Sunset Music Series, the Sea to Sky Gondola holds a Night Market at the base every Friday from 4-8PM. The intimate marketplace hosts a variety of local designers and craftsmen in a unique setting.
What do you design?
Re:creation brings you one-of-a-kind upcycled clothing, jewellery, scarves, and accessories. I scour the Sea to Sky corridor for vintage, old or outdated clothing and re-work them into a more modern design. For my jewelry, I use old beads, components, and scrap metals. I rework them into more modern and unique designs by incorporating raw crystals and gems.
How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been a creative person with lots of different mediums & outlets. I've been upcycling all of my life as a hobby, and have also had experience working in the fashion industry. I have so much fun creating, and after working in many different industries I realized I was not happy. I needed to work for myself - I guess it was just that gut feeling telling me to! I successfully started selling clothing online when I was living in Australia. When I moved to beautiful BC and saw how great the local markets were, I knew that was what I wanted to do - I love market life!
What are your design inspirations?
I really just have a passion for sustainability and for creative expression. Nature, colours, gemstones, and the way I want people to feel when they wear an item all contribute as inspiration.
Tell us about your personal style and how it influences your collection.
I don't know what my style is - I just wear and surround myself in all of my favourite things that make me happy! I do like to wear & surround my home with items that have a history or a story. I like that each piece I create also have their own story.
What is your favourite music to listen to while working?
Anything that's not on the radio. Usually chill wave, world music, or sometimes a bit of Deva Premal.
Your advice for aspiring small-business owners?
Practice self-empowerment every day, know your self-worth and know that the world will benefit from you sharing your passion & ideas!
Meet Terri and an array of other talented artists this Friday, July 22 from 4-8PM at the gondola base. After discovering the collections, head to the summit for live world music from TANGA. Follow Terri on Instagram at @recreationwhistler or visit her Facebook page here.
