Gondola installing cars next month

By mid-December, Squamish residents can expect to see passenger cabins on the Sea to Sky Gondola.

Construction is running smoothly, the lift's spokesperson Elyse Mailhot said. In the second or third week of next month, the eight-person cars will be added to the cable that already runs two kilometres up a bluff between Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief.

The equipment is similar to that of Whistler's Peak to Peak, just on a smaller scale, Mailhot said. Proponents expect the gondola will transport 600 people per hour up to the 9,000-square-foot Summit Lodge.

Work will continue as long as crews are able to make the journey up the back road, Mailhot said. The gondola is scheduled to open in May.

“Things will slow down during the snow,” she said.

On Thursday (Nov. 28), officials unveiled its inaugural Sea to Sky Gondola Annual Pass. For a limited time, residents can purchase the annual ticket for $99. Once open, single adult tickets will go for $35. Families of four can buy an annual family pass for $249, the project's general manager Jayson Faulkner stated in a press release....
