What to Expect at the Inaugural Sea to Sky Scramble
19 June, 2015
Retired pro cyclist and avid runner, Jamie Sparling, tells us what to expect from the first ever Sea to Sky Scramble race up the Sea to Summit Trail.
What makes the Sea to Sky Scramble trail event so awesome?
The moment the Sea to Summit trail was built, it became an instant classic. It is well know amongst hikers and trail runner's alike. Having the chance to go 'super-nuke' up it will be challenging, painful and rewarding!
How fast do you think the fastest runner will get to the top of the Sea to Sky Scramble?
I think that the fastest guys will go 48ish minutes. I follow Nick Elson on Strava and saw that he has done a few training runs at about 52 mins. When that guy takes his safety off, watch out!
What will be the most fun part of the Sea to Sky Scramble?
For me, the best part will be the overwhelming rush of endorphins at the top. A maxed-out aerobic effort, mountain air, and a great mix of people are the perfect ingredients for a quality of life cocktail.
What will be the most challenging part of the Sea to Sky Scramble?
I think the most challenging part will be controlling the effort on the early parts of the run. Vertical races are hard to pace and it is really easy to bite off more than you can chew and then end up exploding all over the mountain.
Any tips for racers?
Backing it off until the view point at 4km will pay back 10-fold in the second half of the race!
Why should everyone sign up for the Sea to Sky Scramble?
Everyone needs to experience this trail, and the final view, under the influence of running endorphins. I can guarantee that there will be no Squamish experience better than crushing a pint of local brew at the top post-race!
